What's My Age Again?
Adam's Song
blink-182 emerged from the suburbs of Poway, California in 1992, and over the course of three decades they have shaped the sound of an entire generation of rock music. The trio of bassist and vocalist Mark Hoppus, guitarist and vocalist Tom DeLonge, and drummer Travis Barker built their reputation on a formula that sounds deceptively simple: the speed and energy of punk rock fused with the melodic hooks of pop, delivered with a humor and irreverence that felt completely genuine. From the skate parks and DIY venues of Southern California, they climbed all the way to arenas and stadiums around the world, and the journey there is one of the most remarkable stories in modern rock.
The pivotal moment in blink-182's rise came with Enema of the State, released in June 1999 and produced by Jerry Finn. The album gave the world a handful of songs that immediately became generation-defining anthems. "What's My Age Again?", the lead single, peaked at number two on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and cracked pop radio for the first time. Close behind came "All the Small Things", a lovingly irreverent parody of the boy bands dominating MTV at the time. It peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Modern Rock Tracks chart. The album also contained "Adam's Song", a departure from the band's comedic persona that revealed a deeper emotional range; it climbed to number two on the Billboard Alternative Airplay charts and earned widespread critical praise for its candor and craft. Enema of the State confirmed blink-182 as genuine craftspeople of hook-driven rock, not merely a novelty act.
Take Off Your Pants and Jacket followed in 2001, and then came the band's self-titled 2003 album, which produced "I Miss You". That song topped the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart and became one of the most enduring recordings in their catalog, a moody, string-laced piece that showed a different emotional register entirely.
The years that followed brought turbulence and change. Tom DeLonge departed, Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiba joined as guitarist, and the band recorded two albums in that configuration. Then in 2021, Mark Hoppus revealed a diagnosis of stage 4-A diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. After undergoing chemotherapy and being declared cancer-free, Hoppus reconnected with DeLonge, and the two worked through long-standing rifts. The result, announced in October 2022, was a full reunion of the classic lineup. blink-182 made their return to the stage at Coachella 2023, then launched a worldwide tour that sold out arenas, amphitheaters, and stadiums across the globe.
That reunion produced ONE MORE TIME..., blink-182's ninth studio album, released on October 20, 2023 and fully produced by Travis Barker. Opening with "ANTHEM PART 3", the 17-track record carries themes of tragedy, triumph, and brotherhood throughout. It is the sound of a band that has been through everything together and has come out the other side with something genuine to say. Few bands navigate a road that long and difficult and return with a record this vital. blink-182 made it look like they never left.
