DOYOUNG's voice has been a constant in NCT's music since the group first took shape in 2016, but it is on his solo recordings that the full weight of what he can do becomes undeniable. Born Kim Dong-young on February 1, 1996, in Guri, South Korea, he was discovered at a youth arts festival and brought into the SM Entertainment training system. Before his official NCT debut, he was part of the pre-debut group SM ROOKIES and built early visibility as a host of MBC's Show Champion, a role that showed both his comfort in front of a camera and his natural ease with audiences.
He debuted as one of NCT U's original members in 2016, appearing on the landmark single "The 7th Sense" alongside Taeyong, Jaehyun, Mark, Ten, and Taeil. In the years that followed, his presence extended across NCT U, NCT 127, and the trio sub-unit NCT DOJAEJUNG with Jaehyun and Jungwoo, whose debut EP Perfume in April 2023 became the best-selling debut album by an SM Entertainment act. Within every configuration, DOYOUNG's voice has been the emotional anchor, capable of holding both delicacy and power without straining for either.
His solo debut arrived in April 2024 with Youth, his first studio album, released on April 22 by SM Entertainment. Youth is a collection of ten tracks shaped by pop-rock ballads and genuine emotional weight, built around the title track "Little Light." The song carries a strong guitar riff and vocals that move between delicate restraint and powerful release, with lyrics about wanting to become a source of strength and illumination for someone who needs it. DOYOUNG also co-wrote two of the album's songs, lending the record an autobiographical warmth that drew listeners in. SM Entertainment's Taeyeon appears as a featured artist on one of the B-sides, a meeting of two of K-pop's most distinctive vocal identities.
In June 2025, DOYOUNG returned with Soar, his second studio album. The record deepens the guitar-forward, emotionally expressive territory he staked out on Youth, with the lead single "Memory" providing an immediate emotional center. For Soar, he worked alongside some of the biggest names in Korean rock ballad writing: Yoon Dohyun of YB, Kim Yoonah of Jaurim, and Kim Jong Wan of NELL. The album carries the message of the "power to dream," telling the story of a journey toward the sky while finding one's own path along the way.
Songs like "What A Love," "I find you," "Cactus," and "Letter" add further layers to a catalog that speaks to connection, growth, and the particular feeling of being alive and still figuring things out. DOYOUNG has spent his career making that uncertainty sound beautiful rather than frightening. Across both solo albums and his years at the heart of NCT, he has proven that a voice as expressive as his is only the beginning of what makes him worth listening to. The rest is craft, commitment, and an emotional intelligence that deepens with every release.
