LIKE I WANT YOU

GIVĒON moves with the unhurried certainty of an artist who has always known exactly what he offers. Born Giveon Dezmann Evans on February 21, 1995, and raised in Long Beach, California, he grew up in a city renowned for G-funk and gangsta rap, but his personal soundtrack ran deeper and slower, steeped in soul and the emotional precision of a kid who wrote his first song at eleven, after a fifth-grade heartbreak.

He attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School and, at eighteen, took a music education program at the Grammy Museum. There he encountered Frank Sinatra, and something clicked. Sinatra's baritone phrasing, the capacity to make a room feel intimate while the sound remained enormous, seeped into GIVĒON's developing voice. What emerged is one of the most distinctive instruments in contemporary R&B: a deep, resonant baritone that feels almost anachronistic in the finest sense, placing him in conversation with soul greats of prior decades while remaining completely of this moment.

His major-label debut single, "Like I Want You," arrived in 2019 and announced the world he intended to build: bluesy, lush, romantic, unhurried. The song set the stage for his 2020 debut EP "Take Time," which earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album. That same year he released a second EP, "When It's All Said and Done," which reached the top ten on the US Top R&B Albums chart. It was a remarkable pace for someone who had only recently introduced himself.

Two collaborations from 2020 marked a turning point. Drake called on GIVĒON for "Chicago Freestyle," from the "Dark Lane Demo Tapes" project, where his voice provided grounding and warmth to the record. Justin Bieber then featured him alongside Daniel Caesar on "Peaches," from the "Justice" album, a recording that expanded his reach across multiple continents.

Still, the song that truly cemented his name was "Heartbreak Anniversary," released on his own birthday in February 2020. A downtempo ballad about marking the anniversary of a lost relationship, it became a slow-burning phenomenon, climbing to number sixteen on the US Billboard Hot 100 and earning a 4x Platinum certification from the RIAA. The emotional weight rests almost entirely on that voice and a melody that refuses to release its grip.

He has kept building. His ongoing "BELOVED" project, including "JEZEBEL" from "BELOVED: ACT II," extends the same emotional territory with growing confidence and craft. Beyond the music, GIVĒON has also given back to Long Beach directly, donating a recording studio to the city he describes as "fun, dangerous, and interesting all at the same time."

His art flows from genuine belief in love, loss, and the staying power of a well-placed note. Long Beach made him. The rest of the world is catching up.
