j-hope grew up in Gwangju, South Korea, and fell in love with dance before he ever imagined a career in music. That foundational passion for movement and rhythm became the defining thread of his artistic identity, first as a member of BTS and later as one of the most versatile and adventurous solo artists to emerge from the group's expanding universe. Born Jung Ho-seok, he debuted alongside BTS in 2013 and quickly established himself as the group's lead dancer and a crucial creative voice, bringing an electric, effervescent energy to everything he touched.

His solo work began in earnest in 2018 with the mixtape Hope World, a bold announcement of his individual artistic identity. The following year, "Chicken Noodle Soup," his high-energy collaboration with Becky G, made history as the first solo entry by a BTS member on the Billboard Hot 100, demonstrating both his commercial reach and the irrepressible warmth and fun that characterize his approach to performance.

The trajectory accelerated in 2022. That year, j-hope became the first Korean solo act to headline Lollapalooza, one of America's most storied music festivals, and released his official debut studio album Jack in the Box. The album revealed a deeper, more introspective dimension to his artistry, tackling themes of ambition, anxiety, and resilience with sonic breadth that challenged every expectation. The Lollapalooza performance cemented his reputation as a live artist of extraordinary presence and magnetism.

In 2024, he returned with Hope on the Street Vol. 1, a project rooted in his origins as a dancer. Accompanied by a six-part documentary series that followed him to different cities as he reconnected with street dance culture, the album debuted at number five on the Billboard 200, his highest-charting solo project. That same period brought "on the street," a reflective collaboration with J. Cole that captured a quieter, more contemplative side of his creative personality.

Back from mandatory military service, j-hope returned to music in 2025 with remarkable momentum. "MONA LISA," released in March and co-produced with Blake Slatkin, is a smooth hip-hop and R&B track that uses the imagery of Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece to celebrate the distinctive qualities that make a person genuinely captivating. "Killin' It Girl," a collaboration featuring GloRilla, followed with energy and rhythmic confidence, described as capturing the thrill of falling in love at first sight. Then came "SPAGHETTI," recorded alongside girl group Le Sserafim, a bright, hook-driven single that debuted at number one on Billboard's World Digital Song Sales and continued an already remarkable run of releases.

From the dance studios of Gwangju to headlining major festivals and topping global charts across multiple eras, j-hope has built a solo career that reflects every dimension of who he is: dancer, rapper, producer, and collaborator. He brings complete commitment to every project he undertakes, and the music consistently makes that dedication audible in the most direct and compelling way.
