Some sub-units exist to experiment. NCT DOJAEJUNG exists to seduce. The trio, composed of NCT members Doyoung, Jaehyun, and Jungwoo, was assembled around a chemistry that had been visible for years before they were ever officially announced as a group. Doyoung and Jaehyun were part of NCT's debut lineup in 2016; Jungwoo joined the broader rotation in early 2018. The three had spent years performing alongside each other, and that shared history became the emotional and sonic foundation of everything they would build as a unit.
The first public glimpse of NCT DOJAEJUNG as a trio came in October 2022, when they performed the song "Can We Go Back" during NCT 127's Neo City: The Link+ concerts in Seoul. The moment made clear that there was something distinctive in this particular combination of voices and personalities. SM Entertainment confirmed the unit's formation in March 2023, and on April 17 of that year, DOJAEJUNG released their debut extended play, Perfume.
Perfume arrived as the best-selling debut album by any SM Entertainment act and the best-selling debut album by a K-pop sub-unit. Those figures speak to the genuine enthusiasm audiences brought to this specific pairing of talent, but the music earns that enthusiasm on its own terms. The six-track project is soaked in R&B warmth, with romantic lyrics that trust the listener to feel things without spelling them out, and a production approach that is lush without being cluttered.
The title track, "Perfume," is an R&B electropop song built around the sensuous idea of wanting to leave a lasting impression on someone significant: the way a scent lingers in a room long after a person has gone. It is a quietly clever metaphor carried by a performance that never overexplains itself. "Kiss," the second track, brings a medium-tempo R&B groove and a dreamy atmospheric quality that settles over the listener like something half-remembered. Songs including "Electricity," "Pretend," and "Troublesome" further demonstrate the trio's ability to navigate the full emotional spectrum of desire and longing with nuance and craft.
What makes NCT DOJAEJUNG so compelling is how natural it all sounds. Three vocalists who have spent years performing in larger configurations bring a specificity and intimacy to this smaller setting that changes what is possible. The textures feel more personal, the decisions more deliberate. Every musical choice on Perfume feels like it emerged from a genuine conversation between the three of them about what they wanted the experience of listening to feel like.
In a landscape where group sub-units can sometimes feel like scheduling exercises, NCT DOJAEJUNG landed as something genuinely worth caring about. Their catalog, stretching from the delicate atmospherics of "Kiss" through the assured energy of "Electricity" and the romantic ache of "Pretend," keeps growing in resonance the longer you spend with it. This is a trio that knows exactly what it sounds like together, and that knowledge is everything.
