NCT Dream debuted on August 25, 2016, as the third sub-unit of NCT and the one most explicitly anchored in the themes of youth. Designed by SM Entertainment around adolescence, friendship, and coming-of-age, the unit launched with a concept that extended even to its membership structure: originally, members were expected to graduate from the unit upon reaching adulthood, a theatrical premise that gave NCT Dream a built-in sense of urgency and impermanence.
That idea gave way in October 2020, when all seven members, Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle, and Jisung, were made permanent fixtures through the NCT 2020: Resonance initiative. The graduation system ended, and NCT Dream became a stable unit with a shared history, a shared present, and a shared future to build toward.
The decision to fix the lineup coincided with a period of expanding ambition for the group. In 2021, NCT Dream released their first full-length studio album, "Hot Sauce," a project that demonstrated how thoroughly the unit had grown beyond their early single-focused releases. The album blended their signature energy with more fully realized production, and the title track announced a sharpness and confidence that years of work had been building toward. The album was repackaged later that year as "Hello Future."
2022 brought "Glitch Mode," their second studio album, and a significant moment in the group's commercial trajectory. The album topped South Korean charts and reached number 50 on the Billboard 200, NCT Dream's first appearance on the main U.S. chart. The title track "Glitch Mode" earned Daesang recognition at the Genie Music Awards, a marker of how far the unit had traveled from its debut era. That December, the special mini-album "Candy" offered a warmer seasonal counterpoint to the year's harder-edged work, showing the range available to a group now fully in command of what it wants to say.
"Broken Melodies," released in June 2023 as the lead single from their third studio album "ISTJ," showed yet another dimension: a more emotionally direct register that let the romantic and reflective side of NCT Dream's songwriting come fully to the surface. It was a different kind of confidence, quieter and more assured. "Beat It Up," from their 2025 EP of the same name, brought the group into a more recent chapter, maintaining the collective energy and group chemistry that has always been central to their appeal.
NCT Dream's arc from teenage unit to fully established group is one of the more compelling stories in contemporary K-Pop. The themes of friendship and shared experience that animated their debut have not been abandoned so much as they have been deepened, grounded now in the real history that seven people accumulate across nearly a decade of genuine collaboration.
On Divehouse, their top songs span the major chapters of that arc: the declaration of "Hot Sauce," the award-winning confidence of "Glitch Mode," the warmth of "Candy," the emotional directness of "Broken Melodies," and the continued forward motion of "Beat It Up." It is a catalog built on real growth, by a group that has earned every stage of it.
