Soul Exchange arrived late in 2023 with a clear sense of purpose. Founded in the Austin, Texas area by Bryce and Grant before recruiting Pete, Colby, and Austin to complete the lineup, the band plays metallic hardcore with the kind of direct, oppressive force that the genre demands when it is working at its best. Their debut single dropped in July 2024 and confirmed immediately that this was a band with something to say and the sonics to say it at full volume.
The signing to 1126 Records, a New England-based metal label with a reputation for championing uncompromising heavy music, provided the infrastructure for Soul Exchange to bring their first proper EP to the world. Slow Descent arrived on June 5, 2026, five tracks organized around a central theme: addiction. Not as abstraction or metaphor, but as a concrete force that destroys people from the inside and radiates outward, damaging everyone close enough to feel it. It is heavy subject matter delivered with appropriately heavy music.
"Exchange Rate" opens the record and sets the terms. The title suggests a transaction, a cost being paid, which is exactly how the concept of addiction operates in the album's framework. "Familiar Poison (feat. Discourage)" brings in a collaborator from the broader heavy community, a feature that speaks to the network of bands working in metallic hardcore with shared aesthetics and mutual respect. "In The Room But Not With Me" addresses the helplessness of watching a person disappear in real time while physically present, the emotional distance that substance addiction creates between people who are standing in the same space.
"Cash And Cold Hands (feat. Disgrace)" features Taylor Young, a figure known from Deadbody and Twitching Tongues whose presence in heavy music speaks for itself. The track comes with a music video that matches its oppressive mood. "Slow Descent" closes the EP as the title track, completing the arc of a record that takes its concept from first principles all the way through to its logical end.
Texas has been producing metallic hardcore and heavy music of genuine consequence for years, and Soul Exchange belong in that lineage. Slow Descent is a debut EP that announces a band with conviction and craft, making music about something that matters, with the technique to make sure the weight lands.
