TAEYONG arrived in the K-pop ecosystem through SM Entertainment in 2012, discovered by street scouts outside his school in South Korea. By 2016, he had debuted as part of NCT, stepping into the group's first sub-unit NCT U before claiming the leader role of NCT 127 later that same year. That leadership has extended across the broader NCT universe, a sprawling, rotating constellation of talent managed with both instinct and craft. In 2019, he also joined SuperM, a supergroup co-developed by SM Entertainment and Capitol Records that gathered some of the most dynamic performers in the K-pop world under one banner.
Even before his official solo launch, TAEYONG was building a catalog that spoke for itself. The pre-solo single "Long Flight" offered early proof, climbing to number six on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart and making clear that audiences were ready for whatever he wanted to say on his own terms. Songs like "Be Natural," "ZOO," and "AP" further demonstrated an instinct for melody and texture that extended well beyond any single creative framework.
In June 2023, TAEYONG became the first NCT member to make an official solo debut as a soloist, releasing the EP Shalala. The title track announced itself with remarkable rhythmical percussion and strong hip-hop energy, precise and physical in a way that felt immediately his. The project also showcased a collaborative spirit in "Move Mood Mode," a track featuring Red Velvet's main vocalist Wendy, where the contrast of their voices opened up something softer and more expansive. The Shalala era introduced a version of TAEYONG with full creative latitude, and he used every bit of it.
The 2024 Tap EP sustained that momentum, adding six more tracks to a growing body of solo work. Around the same time, TAEYONG enlisted in the South Korean Navy as an active-duty soldier in April 2024. He completed his service and was discharged in December 2025, returning to music with the kind of accumulated purpose that only time and distance can cultivate.
That return found its fullest expression in WYLD, his debut full-length album, released in May 2026 and rising to number three on the Circle Albums Chart. WYLD refuses to stay inside any single lane. Across its ten tracks, it moves through hip-hop, jazz, rock, electronic, hyperpop, and future bass, with TAEYONG co-writing every song and contributing to the composition of nine of them. The title track draws its concept from the instinctive movements of wild animals, layering intense bass and heavy rhythm instruments with experimental textures that feel genuinely untamed. Standout tracks including "Storm," "Hypnotic," and "Mermaid" were first unveiled at his January 2026 concert before the official release, building anticipation the album more than satisfied.
The arc from "Long Flight" to WYLD traces the development of a performer who has always been more than the sum of his group roles. TAEYONG is a songwriter, dancer, and creative force whose investment in the art of sound runs deep and keeps running deeper. The more room he has been given to work with, the more he has proven exactly what he is capable of.
