Kim Tae-hyung, known as V, brings a painterly aesthetic sensibility to his music. A South Korean singer-songwriter, producer, and actor under Big Hit Music, he joined the company at fifteen and spent years absorbing a remarkably wide range of influences: jazz, classical music, vintage pop, and soul. Those influences converge in a solo catalog that feels quietly radical within the K-pop landscape, unhurried where others rush, intimate where others favor spectacle. He also gained recognition as an actor through his supporting role in the 2016 historical Korean drama Hwarang, but it is his music that most fully reveals the depth of what he is building toward.
His debut solo album Layover, released on September 8, 2023, announced his artistic direction with confidence. The collection of six tracks draws deeply from his love of jazz and classical forms: warm bass lines, jazzy piano chords, and fluttering flute solos create an atmosphere that is both nostalgic and emotionally immediate. "Rainy Days" opens a contemplative space, "Love Me Again" unfolds with graceful melodic warmth, and "Slow Dancing," which appears in two versions on the album, embodies the unhurried romanticism that is central to V's musical personality. He chose the name Layover to signify a pause between phases, the moment of stopping over before beginning something new, and the music lives fully inside that suspended, reflective quality.
In 2024, he moved through two releases that revealed his range in different registers. "FRI(END)S," released on March 15, 2024, is a beautifully crafted song about the complicated emotional territory of having romantic feelings for a close friend, navigating the ambiguity of something that can't quite be named. Tender and honest in equal measure, the track became a streaming landmark, earning a place as one of the most-streamed releases of the year by a Korean solo artist.
Later in 2024, he returned with "Winter Ahead," a collaboration with Korean vocalist Park Hyo Shin. The jazz-pop duet, released in November, showcases the peaceful, complementary beauty of their two voices and earned V his fifth solo entry on the Billboard Hot 100, debuting at the top of Billboard's Digital Song Sales.
His reach has grown with each release, and audiences around the world have responded to the very qualities that distinguish him from the mainstream: the restraint, the warmth, the sense that every song is being sung from somewhere real. The jazz-inflected atmosphere of Layover and the confessional directness of "FRI(END)S" draw from the same source, a conviction that compelling art comes not from performing emotion but from inhabiting it. V has inhabited his music from the beginning, and the catalog he is building reflects that with every new release. There is real patience in how he works, and the music he makes with that patience is genuinely beautiful.
